••• Summer 2009 •••
Keera Bhandari ‘08/MA ‘09 is the author (with Hilary Barth) of a new journal article based on her Master’s thesis research. The article will appear in the Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology – click here to read the article (clicking the link will download a PDF). Keera also successfully defended her thesis, and finished collecting data for her final study of how preschool children make use of the testimony of others.
Jenn Garcia ‘10 worked with postdoctoral fellow Mariah Schug on her ongoing studies of the development of group bias in childhood. Mariah also traveled to the Faroe Islands to collect data for a series of collaborative studies.
Kyle MacDonald ‘10 completed data collection for two experiments in an ongoing series of studies investigating children’s numerical estimation, and began work on a new project investigating children’s understanding of testimony.
The lab also welcomed its newest and youngest member, Callahan Jane! Callie was born on July 30th to Hilary Barth and her husband Sean Gomez.

Annie Paladino ‘09 presented her poster, entitled “Young Children’s Performance on a Numerical Estimation Task: Identifying the Source of Change,” at the Spring 2009 Psychology Department Poster Session.

Jessica Sullivan ‘08 and Ariel (Ballinger) Starr ‘07 co-authored a new article with Hilary Barth. Their work on children’s numerical estimation will appear in the journal Cognitive Development. Click here to read the journal article (clicking the link will download a PDF).
Keera Bhandari ‘08/MA ‘09 presented her research at the 2009 Meeting of the Society for Research in Child Development (SRCD), held in Denver, CO from April 2nd to April 4th. The poster presentation, coauthored with Professor Barth, was entitled “Acquiring Knowledge from Others: Preschoolers’ Use of Testimony.” Keera also presented her work at Wesleyan’s Science Thesis Poster Session and at the Psychology Department Poster Session.

Jessica Sullivan ‘08 presented a poster coauthored by Kyle MacDonald ‘10, Annie Paladino ‘09, and Professor Barth at the 2009 Meeting of the Society for Research in Child Development (SRCD), entitled “Children’s Mappings of Number Words to Large Numerosities.” Jess and Kyle also presented this work at the Psychology Department Poster Session.
Mariah Schug (postdoctoral fellow) presented her work at the 2009 Meeting of the Society for Research in Child Development (SRCD) in a poster entitled, “Mother-Infant Interactions in a Cross-Cultural Sample: Mothering Styles and Object Learning in Germany, Greece and Italy.” She presented her work at the Psychology Department Poster Session as well.

Ariel Ballinger ‘07 presented her thesis research at the 2007 Meeting of the Society for Research in Child Development (SRCD), held in Boston, MA from March 29th to April 1st. The poster presentation, coauthored with Professor Hilary Barth, was entitled “Counting, Estimation, and Approximate Nonverbal Arithmetic in Young Children.” Ariel’s project was also featured in the Wesleyan Connection newsletter.
Jessica Tsai ‘07, Ariel Ballinger ‘07, Rachel Jacobson ‘08, and AnjaLi Carrasco ‘07 were coauthors on a poster presented by Hilary Barth at the 2007 Meeting of the Society for Research in Child Development (SRCD), entitled “Children’s Assessments of Volume and Number in 3D Object Arrays.”
